Canada’s seniors have shaped our country in countless ways and paved a better path for future generations. That’s why we’ve been working hard every day to give seniors and future retirees greater security and a better quality of life.

What we’ve done for seniors

First, we restored the age of eligibility for OAS (Old Age Security) and GIS (Guaranteed Income Supplement) to 65 years, after the Conservatives decided to raise it to 67 years.

This means $34,000 more goes into the pockets of the lowest income Canadians as they become seniors.

We also increased the OAS and GIS payments, giving seniors $1,700 more, each and every year.

We made the first expansion of benefits in the 50 year history of the Canada Pension Plan (CCP).

Helping you stay active and social

Our government increased funding for the New Horizons for Seniors Program. Here in Calgary, funded programs include art classes, fitness equipment, and group meals that help reduce social isolation and connect you with your community.

Our federal Liberal government recently passed the Accessible Canada Act, the biggest piece of legislation for the rights of persons with disabilities in 30 years. As we age, our chance of having a disability increases, so this legislation will have a big impact on seniors when you use federal government programs and buildings, or simply go to the bank or airport.

Plus, through our Enabling Accessibility Fund, we are funding construction, renovations and equipment to make spaces more accessible. For example, we funded the games room reno at the Good Companions 50 Plus Club and gym upgrades at the Kerby Centre.

Affordable Housing

Our National Housing Strategy includes accessible housing for seniors.

What’s next: introducing new supports

Our federal Liberal government introduced some important new plans for supporting you in staying healthy, active and financially secure. It’s all part of our Budget 2019.

Supporting Your Health:

Supporting Your Finances:

With measures like these, our budget will help make sure you can spend less time worrying about your health and finances, and more time enjoying the dignified retirement you deserve.

Throughout the year, my team and I always get out to visit seniors residences and chat with constituents.
