Living my whole life in Calgary, it’s been incredible to see the profound and positive shift in attitudes towards the LGBTQ2+ community.
Of course, real change requires more than shifting attitudes.
It requires legislation.
So let’s be clear: every significant federal advancement in Canadian LGBTQ2+ rights has been made by Liberal governments.
I first marched in the Calgary Pride Parade in 2004 as a rank-and-file citizen. This September will be my 16th year of participation.
After being elected to the Alberta legislative assembly in 2008, I was the first member to introduce legislation to support gay-straight alliances in our schools. GSAs not only create a more inclusive space, but they’ve also been shown to reduce bullying and suicides.
I am proud of the fact that the Liberals have been on the right side of moving the chains of justice forward since 1967, starting with Pierre Elliott Trudeau and his clear declaration that “there’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation,” to Paul Martin legalizing marriage equality, and to our government passing Bill C-16.
There is more work to be done, and I am proud to be able to serve in this role to see it through to its finish.
