Gun Control – Firearms Legislation

For me, this is personal.

In 1991 in Calgary, at age 21, I was the victim of a random act of gun violence. I became a C5 quadriplegic.

Every aspect of life changed instantly for me and my family. Sadly, it’s an experience that too many families have to go through.

While we are lucky to live in one of the safest countries in the world, we all know Canada is not immune to gun violence.

That’s why our Liberal national government is implementing common-sense gun legislation as well as other efforts to help keep your family safe.

If these changes can prevent another shooting, they are worth it.

New firearms legislation

Our new legislation provides practical, targeted and measured steps to help keep Canadians safe, including:

Helping to stop gun and gang violence

Re-directing youth away from violence

Our Liberal government is funding community programs to stop violence before it starts. The programs help vulnerable kids get their lives on a better track, stay out of the justice system, and build hope for the future.

One example is Re-Direct, a Calgary Police Service program that brings together various partner organizations. We increased their funding, to help more Calgary kids.
