Our Liberal government’s Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is simpler, tax-free and more generous. In fact, 9 out of 10 Canadian families are better off under our CCB than with Stephen Harper’s old plan.
The CCB is a cash benefit for families. You can spend it on whatever your family needs, such as housing, sports camps or new winter boots. The money is tax free, but you need to file your taxes in order to be eligible.
You can calculate your monthly benefit here.
According to Statistics Canada data, since our government was elected in 2015, Alberta’s child poverty rate dropped from 10% to 5%. For kids living with a single mom, the poverty rate plummeted from 36% to 18%. It’s an enormous improvement in a very short time, and I’m proud to be part of it.
The former federal Conservative government chose to send child benefit cheques to millionaires. We didn’t think that made sense.
Our Liberal government chose to target our Canada Child Benefit towards families who needed it most, lifting 300,000 kids out of poverty. It’s enough kids to fill the Scotiabank Saddledome 15 times!
It means kids with full bellies and stable housing. This is what real change looks like.
