Advancing LGBTQ2 rights: Transgender Day of Visibility

Dear friends,

Having lived my whole life in Calgary, it’s been incredible to see the profound shift in attitudes towards the LGBTQ2 community.

This Sunday is the 10th annual International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV). When I talked about trans rights in the Alberta Legislature 10 years ago as an MLA, it was not a common topic for an Alberta politician.

In 2014, when I put forward a Motion saying all students should be able to attend a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at school if they want to, that topic was uncommon as well. Yet, it became law in Alberta. Without question, GSAs save lives and build more inclusive schools for all students.

The fight must continue to support LBGTQ2 (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and two-spirited) kids and adults. I’m thrilled to see communities standing up to keep #QueerKidsAB safe.

Of course, real change requires more than shifting attitudes. It requires legislation.

So let me be clear: At the federal level, every significant advancement in Canadian LGBTQ2 rights has been made by Liberal governments.

Decriminalizing homosexuality. Prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. Legalizing equal (same-sex) marriage.

Last September was the 15th year I’ve attended the Calgary Pride Parade.

Most recently, our government protected trans and gender-diverse Canadians from discrimination, and passed legislation so that criminal records related to consensual same-sex sexual activity can be destroyed.

I am proud to be an ally and to support good, progressive public policy that makes life better for all Canadians.
