Climate change is real and is the greatest challenge we face as a society. It’s also an important opportunity.
Today, I announced that Calgary’s Waste and Recycling Services department will receive $5.8 million from our federal Liberal government’s Low Carbon Economy Challenge.
As landfill garbage decomposes, it creates methane gas. With our funding, gas collection wells will collect this methane and convert it to carbon dioxide (CO2), which is 25 times less harmful to the environment.
Martin Ortiz from Waste and Recycling Services (pictured above) says the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 630,000 tonnes of CO2.
