Since 2015, child poverty has been cut in half in Alberta. A 50% drop in just a few years, according to new data from Statistics Canada.
Kids with full bellies and stable housing. This is what real change looks like.
Politics is about choices. Our Liberal government chose to focus our Canada Child Benefit on families who need it most. (That action alone lifted 300,000 kids out of poverty, while still leaving 9 out of 10 families better off compared to the previous government’s plan.)
We lowered taxes on the middle class.
We increased supports for lower-income workers.
We created jobs by building important infrastructure – including affordable housing.
It all adds up.
While a 5% child poverty rate is still too high, it’s worlds better than 10%. It’s life-changing for Alberta families. It’s a historic low. And, it means more families have money in their pockets to contribute to the local economy.
This is real change, and I’m proud to be part of it.
