A home for the holidays

As many Calgarians prepare to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, I wanted to share some wonderful news. Right now in our city, women who have experienced homelessness and domestic abuse are unpacking in their new apartment suites. They will be home for the holidays, with a fresh start for the new year.

The Maple is a brand new, safe, accessible building with 25 private suites where women can rebuild their lives. It’s the result of a collaboration between several Calgary non-profits, and is another project funded through our government’s game-changing affordable housing strategy.

Supporting women and girls is a big priority for our federal Liberal government. From launching Canada’s first-ever strategy to prevent and address gender-based violence, to supporting female entrepreneurs, to ensuring our housing strategy considers the unique needs of women and girls, our government is committed to advancing gender equality.

“Women’s homelessness is complex and often hidden. Women will often couch surf or remain in abusive relationships to avoid becoming homeless,” says Sue Tomney, CEO of YWCA Calgary. The YW will provide Maple residents with round-the-clock counselling and other support. Plus, a shared kitchen and other communal spaces will help build a sense of community, stability and friendship.

(Our government is also providing $6 million for the YW’s new home in Inglewood, which is currently under construction.)

I am incredibly proud of the investments our national government is making in Calgary’s affordable housing. Already, we’ve funded many projects here and across Alberta, providing housing for women, families, seniors, young people, people with disabilities, and others who are in need of a safe, stable place to live. And this is just the beginning.

I want to share my best wishes to the new residents at the Maple, and to all of you celebrating the holidays. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas.
